Whether it\u2019s a world-famous site like the <em>Thistlegorm<\/em>,<br \/>\n<em>Zenobia<\/em> or <em>Kittiwake<\/em>, or a lesser-known, unnamed wreck tucked<br \/>\naway in a quiet corner of the world, they all hold secrets of the past. The<br \/>\nstories of sailors, soldiers, captains\u2014and sometimes entire lost eras\u2014call to<br \/>\nsomething deep in us. It\u2019s a quiet, unconscious longing for adventure.<\/p>\n<p>The chance to see and explore a living piece of history is<br \/>\nalways thrilling. But imagine getting to <em>teach<\/em> others about it. For me,<br \/>\nthat\u2019s the essence of continued education in diving\u2014sharing that spark of<br \/>\nwonder and discovery with others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, How Do You Become a PADI Wreck Instructor?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To earn the Wreck Instructor rating, you must first be a <strong>PADI<br \/>\nOpen Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI)<\/strong>. From there, you have a couple of<br \/>\ndifferent options:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udee0\ufe0f Option 1: Specialty<br \/>\nInstructor Training Course<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is the most structured and beneficial path, especially<br \/>\nfor newer instructors. You\u2019ll take part in a <strong>Wreck Diver Specialty<br \/>\nInstructor Training Course<\/strong> led by a <strong>PADI Course Director<\/strong> who is also<br \/>\na <strong>Wreck Instructor Trainer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>During the course, you&#8217;ll cover both <strong>theory<\/strong> and <strong>practical<br \/>\nskills<\/strong>, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reasons<br \/>\n     for wreck diving<\/li>\n<li>Legal<br \/>\n     and environmental considerations<\/li>\n<li>Historical<br \/>\n     and archaeological aspects<\/li>\n<li>Hazards<br \/>\n     and risk management<\/li>\n<li>Surveying<br \/>\n     and mapping a wreck<\/li>\n<li>Laying<br \/>\n     a penetration line safely<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The biggest advantage? You learn directly from an<br \/>\nexperienced instructor who\u2019s taught the course many times before. After<br \/>\ncompletion, your Course Director will submit your application to PADI, and<br \/>\nyou\u2019ll receive your Wreck Instructor certification.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\ud83c\udf0d Option 2: Gain<br \/>\nExperience Independently<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This method is ideal if you\u2019re in a location where Wreck<br \/>\nInstructor Trainers are hard to find\u2014or if you&#8217;re up for a bit of travel and<br \/>\nself-guided exploration.<\/p>\n<p>Dive famous wrecks in places like Cyprus, Malta, Egypt, or<br \/>\nthe Cayman Islands. Explore submerged airplanes, mining machinery, or unique<br \/>\nwreck museums, like the ancient wreck park in <strong>Alonissos, Greece<\/strong>, or the<br \/>\ncold waters of <strong>Scapa Flow<\/strong>, or tropical <strong>Bikini Atoll<\/strong> and <strong>Truk<br \/>\nLagoon<\/strong>. There are wrecks everywhere\u2014each one with its own story.<\/p>\n<p>You can also teach the <strong>Wreck Adventure Dive<\/strong> as part<br \/>\nof the Advanced Open Water Course. Every OWSI is qualified to do this, even on<br \/>\nmodest, local wrecks. You don\u2019t need a famous site\u2014just a safe one.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"923\" src=\"https:\/\/seaworld.gr\/cdc\/wp-content\/uploads\/blogger-import\/why-did-i-become-padi-wreck-instructor\/image-02.jpg\" width=\"617\" alt=\"Why did I become a PADI Wreck Instructor?\"><\/figure>\n<p><\/p>\n<p> Mitilini Wreck, Greece<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve gained enough experience (or taught at least 20<br \/>\nAdventure Dives), you can apply directly to PADI. Just be prepared to provide <strong>proof<br \/>\nof your wreck diving experience<\/strong>\u2014logbooks, photos, and dive details help.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My Journey into Wreck Diving<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wreck diving has always been an exhilarating experience for<br \/>\nme. I still remember my first dive on the <strong>HMS Drake<\/strong>, a World War I-era<br \/>\narmoured cruiser off the coast of Northern Ireland. Surrounded by anchors,<br \/>\nmunitions, and artifacts, I was diving with Phil Cross\u2014my instructor at the<br \/>\ntime\u2014probably during my Advanced Course with <strong>Aquaholics Dive Centre<\/strong> in<br \/>\nPortstewart. That moment, seeing history unfold beneath the waves, was<br \/>\nlife-changing. It was the first time I thought: <em>Maybe I want to become a<br \/>\ndiving instructor.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"385\" src=\"https:\/\/seaworld.gr\/cdc\/wp-content\/uploads\/blogger-import\/why-did-i-become-padi-wreck-instructor\/image-03.jpg\" width=\"596\" alt=\"Why did I become a PADI Wreck Instructor?\"> <\/figure>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\">HMS Drake, Northern Ireland  <\/figure>\n<p>Later, I completed my <strong>Wreck Diver Specialty<\/strong> with <strong>Barracuda<br \/>\nDive Center<\/strong> in Goa, India. The Suzy wreck was completely different from HMS<br \/>\nDrake but just as exciting in its own way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Dive Into the Past \u2013 Teaching the Thistlegorm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the most memorable Wreck Diver courses I\u2019ve ever<br \/>\ntaught was on the <strong>Thistlegorm<\/strong>, a British transport ship sunk by German<br \/>\nbombers in 1941. Resting within recreational limits in Egypt\u2019s <strong>Ras Mohammed<br \/>\nNational Park<\/strong>, it\u2019s packed with wartime relics\u2014trucks, motorbikes,<br \/>\nmunitions, rifles, tanks, even parts of aircraft. There&#8217;s even a steam<br \/>\nlocomotive lying on the seafloor.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"438\" src=\"https:\/\/seaworld.gr\/cdc\/wp-content\/uploads\/blogger-import\/why-did-i-become-padi-wreck-instructor\/image-04.jpg\" width=\"613\" alt=\"Why did I become a PADI Wreck Instructor?\">Thistlegorm, Egypt<\/figure>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t just a course. It was underwater time travel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today: Diving and Teaching Around the World<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since then, I\u2019ve dived and taught on wrecks in <strong>Greece,<br \/>\nMalta, Thailand, Spain, France, Indonesia<\/strong>, and many more places. My<br \/>\nunderstanding of maritime history, military strategy, wreck-related laws, and<br \/>\ntechnical diving has deepened with each location.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, I\u2019m based in <strong>Halkidiki, Greece<\/strong>, where I<br \/>\nteach Wreck Diver and Wreck Instructor courses on the <strong>Mitilini Wreck<\/strong>\u2014a<br \/>\nsmall cargo ship that sank about 60 years ago. It\u2019s a pleasant and accessible<br \/>\ndive site, perfect for training.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"636\" src=\"https:\/\/seaworld.gr\/cdc\/wp-content\/uploads\/blogger-import\/why-did-i-become-padi-wreck-instructor\/image-05.jpg\" width=\"636\" alt=\"Why did I become a PADI Wreck Instructor?\"><\/figure>\n<p><\/p>\n<p> Mitilini Wreck, Greece<\/p>\n<p>Becoming a PADI Wreck Instructor allowed me to<br \/>\ncombine my passion for history, adventure, and teaching. Wrecks are more than<br \/>\njust sunken structures\u2014they\u2019re time capsules filled with stories waiting to be<br \/>\ndiscovered. Whether through structured training or personal exploration,<br \/>\nearning this instructor rating opens the door to teaching others how to safely<br \/>\nexplore these underwater relics.
